SEO and GEO: what overlaps, what differs.

The question people ask is almost always "should we drop one for the other". The answer is no, and for a structural reason: the second does not work without the first.

The dependency nobody mentions

When ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity answer a question that calls for current facts, they do not draw on their training memory: they run a search, retrieve pages, and write from what they find there. That search rests on classic search indexes.

The consequence is simple. A site Google has not indexed appears in no result set, therefore in no generative answer. There is nothing to take. All the markup and structuring work stays without effect until that condition is met.

The shortcut "SEO is dead" sells services. It describes reality badly: search visibility has become the entry condition of a game whose selection rules have changed.

The four levers that serve both

The good news is that most of the work is shared. Four pieces of work produce an effect on both sides, and they are where to start.

  • Heading structure. One H1, no skipped level, subheadings that genuinely announce what follows. A classic engine uses it to understand the subject, a model to delimit a passage.
  • Clarity of the answer. Answer the question in the first three sentences, before developing. That is what produces a snippet in the results, and it is exactly what a model takes.
  • Visible freshness. A publication and update date, shown and marked up. Both systems use them to separate equivalent content.
  • Technical health. HTTPS, response time, no redirect chains, reasonable HTML. A crawler that struggles to retrieve a page retrieves it less often, whatever its nature.

The three levers specific to generative engines

Explicit permission for the AI crawlers. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, OAI-SearchBot and Google-Extended are separate crawlers from Googlebot, with their own rules in robots.txt. Allowing Googlebot does not allow them. Blocking is common, often inherited from a plugin or a host setting, and it cancels everything else.

Entity declaration. A model more readily cites a source it can name and place. A JSON-LD Organization or LocalBusiness block tells it who you are, where you work and on what. The detail of which schemas to declare fits on one page.

Cutting into self-contained passages. A paragraph has to make sense out of its context, because it will be read out of its context. That means naming the subject in the sentence rather than writing "it" or "this solution", and not spreading one answer across three sections.

What only serves classic search

Two pieces of work stay specific to SEO and have no direct effect on citation: acquiring inbound links, and the fine internal linking meant to distribute authority between pages. They still count — but they count for being found, not for being retained.

How to split the effort, depending on where you stand

You receive almost no organic traffic

The subject is not GEO. You first have to exist in the index: content, structure, indexing, sitemap. Investing in citability before that is decorating a shop window on a closed street.

You receive traffic, and it is eroding on informational questions

This is where the trade-off genuinely arises. Pages that answered "how do I", "what is", "what is the difference" are losing clicks to generated answers. The right reaction is not to delete them but to make them quotable: they then become a source of recommendation rather than a source of visits.

Your business is local

The two converge almost completely. An up-to-date business listing, consistency of name, address and phone number everywhere they appear, real reviews, a page dedicated to the area you serve. Those are the same signals that feed the local pack and the generative answers to "a professional near me".

Frequently asked

Should we stop doing SEO to do GEO?

No, and the reverse would be counter-productive. A generative engine gets its sources through a classic search: a site absent from the index has no chance of being cited. SEO remains the entry condition; GEO decides what happens once you are in.

Will traffic fall because of generated answers?

On purely informational questions, yes, mechanically: the answer is given without a click. On questions that call for an action — compare, buy, book, get in touch — the click stays, and the citation becomes a recommendation. That is why splitting the effort depends heavily on the kind of queries that bring you customers.

Can the same content serve both?

Largely. A structured, dated, signed text that answers a precise question in its opening lines serves ranking and extraction alike. The divergences are on specific points: internal linking and inbound links on the SEO side, entity markup and passage-level structure on the GEO side.

How do we know which to prioritise?

By looking at where your customers come from today. If you receive almost no organic traffic, the subject is search visibility, not GEO. If you do receive it and it is eroding on informational queries, GEO becomes the useful trade-off.
